The FlashcardMaker Chrome extension reads the text you select, or the visible text of the current page, only when you click its button, its menu item or its keyboard shortcut. That text is placed in the address of a new flashcardmaker.me tab, after the # sign, so it is not sent to any server by the browser; the flashcardmaker.me page sends it to our generator only to create your flashcards, exactly as if you had pasted it in.
The extension itself collects no personal data, stores nothing, uses no analytics or cookies, and contacts no server other than opening flashcardmaker.me. It does not sell or share data and does not use it for advertising or credit decisions. How flashcardmaker.me handles the text and your account is described in our privacy policy.

Is the FlashcardMaker Chrome extension free?
Yes. The extension is free. It sends your text to flashcardmaker.me, where the normal free limits apply (signed-out: 1 deck a day with 10 cards; free account: 3 decks to start). Pro removes the limits.
Do I need an API key or an OpenAI account?
No. The extension contains no AI key and calls no AI service itself. Flashcards are generated on flashcardmaker.me with your own FlashcardMaker account, or as a guest.
What permissions does it ask for?
Only activeTab, contextMenus and scripting. It can read a page only at the moment you click the button, the menu item or the shortcut — never in the background, and it has no access to your browsing history.
Which languages does it support?
The extension interface is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and you can make flashcards from text in any language — the deck comes back in the language of the text.
Can I make flashcards from a PDF or YouTube video?
For PDFs and YouTube videos, use the PDF to flashcards and YouTube tools on flashcardmaker.me, which handle the whole file or transcript. The extension is for text on web pages.
