How AP scoring works
- Step 1
Raw section scores
Multiple choice is the number you got right, with no penalty for guessing. Free-response questions are scored by trained readers against a rubric, with a fixed maximum per question (for example 9 points on each AP Calculus question).
- Step 2
Weighted composite
Each section is multiplied by its weight so the sections add up to 100% of the exam. Most STEM exams split 50/50; AP Psychology is two thirds multiple choice and the history exams give 60% to writing.
- Step 3
Convert to 1-5
College Board sets the composite cutoffs for a 5, 4, 3 and 2 after each exam so a given score means the same thing every year. The cutoffs are not published, so any calculator's conversion is an estimate.

AP score calculator FAQ
How are AP exams scored?
Each exam has a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. Multiple choice is scored by number correct (no penalty for wrong answers). Free-response answers are scored by trained readers using a rubric. College Board weights each section, adds them into a composite score, and converts the composite to a 1-5 score using cutoffs set after each exam.
Does College Board publish the exact AP score cutoffs?
No. College Board publishes the national score distribution for each exam and the exam structure, but not the raw-score cutoffs for a 3, 4 or 5, and they change slightly from year to year. That is why every calculator on this site labels its result "Estimated" and shows a borderline margin.
What is a passing AP score?
A 3 is generally described by College Board as "qualified" and a 4 or 5 as "well qualified" and "extremely well qualified". Whether a score earns college credit depends on each college, so check the credit policy of the schools you are applying to.
Is there a penalty for guessing on AP multiple choice?
No. AP multiple-choice questions are scored only on the number you get right, so answer every question.
Which exam format do these calculators use?
The format College Board lists for the 2026-27 school year (the May 2027 exams). Several exams changed for 2027: Calculus and Physics 1 have a new number of multiple-choice questions, AP Statistics has been revised, and the history exams have updated short-answer and long-essay questions. Each subject page lists what changed.
How accurate are these AP score calculators?
The inputs are accurate: question counts, weights and free-response point values come from College Board. The 1-5 conversion is an estimate built from College Board score distributions and published third-party charts. Expect the real cutoff to differ by a few points, which is why results near a cutoff are flagged as borderline.
Can I get my free-response score before I take the real exam?
Score a released free-response question against the College Board scoring guidelines for that question, or ask your teacher to score a practice response. Self-scoring tends to run high, so be strict with yourself.
