How to print index cards

  1. Step 1

    Choose size and style

3 × 5 is the classic flashcard size. Ruled matches store-bought cards.

  2. Step 2

    Pick paper or real cards

Letter paper prints several cards per sheet with cut lines; “Real index cards” sets the page to the card size.

  3. Step 3

    Print at 100%

In the print dialog, set scale to 100% (Actual size), turn off headers and footers, then print or Save as PDF.

Index card template FAQ

How do I print on 3x5 index cards?

+

Choose 3 × 5 in and “Real index cards” above, then Print. The page size is set to 5 × 3 inches with no margins, one card per page. Put the cards in your printer’s manual or rear feed tray, set scale to 100%, and check the paper size in the print dialog matches. Print one test card first to see which side and direction your printer feeds.

Will the cards print at exactly 3 × 5 inches?

+

Yes, as long as the print dialog’s scale is 100% (Actual size), not “Fit to page”. Cards are drawn in inches, not pixels, so they come out at true size on Letter paper. Measure the first sheet with a ruler if you are cutting many.

How many index cards fit on one sheet of paper?

+

On US Letter (8.5 × 11 in): three 3 × 5 cards, two 4 × 6 cards, or two 5 × 8 cards (landscape cards stacked). The template adds dashed cut lines around each card.

Can I type on the index cards before printing?

+

Yes. Type one card per line in the box. Write “term - definition” and the term prints above the red line with the definition on the ruled lines below. Up to 60 cards at a time. Leave the box empty for blank cards.

Is there an index card template for Google Docs or Word?

+

You do not need one: this page prints straight from your browser and you can Save as PDF from the print dialog, which opens in Word, Google Drive and any printer. In Word or Google Docs you would have to set a custom page size (5 × 3 in) and margins yourself.

What is the line spacing on a ruled index card?

+

Standard ruled index cards have a red header line near the top and blue lines about 1/4 inch apart. The ruled style here uses the same layout and spacing, so it looks like a store-bought card.

Can I make flashcards faster than writing each card?

+

Yes. Paste your notes into our free AI flashcard maker and it writes the questions and answers for you. Then print them as foldable flashcards, or study them online with spaced repetition.
