Why fill in the blank beats multiple choice for memory
A multiple-choice question lets you recognise the right answer. A blank makes you produce it, which is harder and does more for long-term memory. That is why cloze deletion is the core of most spaced-repetition decks. Use fill in the blank for terms and definitions, and save multiple choice for concepts with confusable options.
Ideas for using it
- Vocabulary checks from a word list, in any language.
- Reading comprehension: paste a passage and test the key facts.
- Exam review: turn a study guide into recall practice. Pair it with the practice test generator.
- Class worksheets printed with the key. Teachers can build full mixed tests with the AI test generator.

Fill in the blank generator FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the fill in the blank generator choose which words to blank out?
The AI reads your text and blanks the term a student should know, usually a key concept, name, date or vocabulary word of one to four words, instead of random words. Each sentence is rewritten so it still makes sense with the blank in it.
Does it accept answers that are spelled differently?
Yes. Every blank stores a list of accepted answers, such as synonyms and other spellings, and grading ignores capital letters, punctuation, extra spaces and a leading “the” or “a”. So “The Chloroplasts.” matches “chloroplasts”.
Can I print a fill in the blank worksheet?
Yes. Choose “Print quiz + answer key”: each question prints with an answer line, name and score lines at the top, and the key starts on a new page. Use Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a file.
Is it free?
Yes. Up to 10 blanks per worksheet with no account, 15 with a free account; each worksheet uses one daily free generation (1 a day without an account, 5 with one). Pro allows up to 100 per worksheet with no daily limit.
Can I mix fill in the blank with multiple choice?
Yes. Fill in the blank is selected on this page, but you can tick multiple choice and true/false too for a mixed test. For a full mixed test with a key, see the AI test generator.
Does it work for language learning?
Yes. Paste a text in the language you are learning, or type a topic such as “Spanish past tense verbs”, and the blanks and answers are written in that language. It is a quick way to practise vocabulary and grammar in context.
