How to use a vocabulary quiz so the words stick

  • Quiz in context. A fill-in-the-blank sentence shows whether a student can use the word, not just recognise it.
  • Quiz early, then again. A short quiz on day one and again a few days later beats one big test at the end of the unit.
  • Recycle the misses. The words a student gets wrong become the next flashcard deck; the rest can wait.

Want the words as cards first? Use the vocabulary flashcard maker. Younger students practising spelling can use the spelling worksheet generator, and full mixed tests are in the AI test generator. For longer quizzes every day, see Pro.

Vocabulary quiz maker FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a vocabulary quiz from my word list?

Paste the words, one per line, with or without definitions (“word - meaning”), and click generate. Multiple choice and fill in the blank are selected by default: the AI writes a definition question for each word and a sentence that uses it in context. Add true/false if you like.

Can I print it as a vocabulary worksheet?

Yes. Choose “Print quiz + answer key” for a worksheet with name and score lines, answer lines for each question, and the key on its own page. Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep a copy or share it with a class.

Can I make a vocabulary quiz from a reading passage?

Yes. Paste the passage instead of a list and the quiz tests the words a reader is most likely to stumble over, using the sentences from the text. It works well before or after a reading assignment.

Is the vocabulary quiz maker free?

Yes. Up to 10 questions per quiz with no account, 15 with a free account; each quiz uses one daily free generation (1 a day without an account, 5 with one). Grading, retakes and printing are free. Pro allows up to 100 questions with no daily limit.

Does fill in the blank accept other forms of the word?

Each blank stores the accepted answers, and grading ignores capital letters, punctuation and extra spaces, so “Benevolent.” matches “benevolent”. Where another form fits the sentence, it is usually listed as an accepted answer too.

Does it work for SAT, GRE or ESL vocabulary and other languages?

Yes. Paste any list: SAT and GRE words, a unit’s ESL vocabulary, or Spanish or French words. Questions are written in the language of your list. For long-term memory, turn the missed words into flashcards with spaced repetition.
